2019 Happy Little Things BOM, Block 2

Hello Everyone! It’s time for Happy Little Things, Block 2, BOM by Jacquelynne Steves. Visit Jacquelynne for important information about this month’s block, to see the quilted version of the block and to sign up if you haven’t already done so, it’s not too late.

Again, I’ve made a little project instead of the quilt block. I also used the Bitty Blooms embroidery designs to make a Fall small decoration to go on my kitchen shelves.

This month’s sponsor is Aurifil and the giveaway will be a Designer Thread Box. I love Aurifil thread. I use it for general purpose sewing, piecing, and quilting. I also use Aurifloss, a 6 strand embroidery thread. I used the Aurifloss in the Bitty Blooms this month. Read to the bottom of this post to see how you can have 8 chances to win your own Designer Box of Aurifil Thread.

This month, I used the embroidery design to make a Needle Book. I have several, but I made this one to hold needles for different types of projects that I can keep on my table where I do hand work. If you recall from Block 1, I’m showing you how you can use your embroidery or applique in different ways besides just in pillows or quilts. I’ve also written a tutorial for making the needle book. If you decide to make one, tag me on social media, #thequiltingnook, I’d love to see it.

It has an inside pocket so you can take it on the go with your scissors and thread, too. I made four “pages” using felted wool. Each page will store needles for embroidery, cross stitch, applique and general sewing.

I made it with a 1/2″ “spine”. I wanted it to easily close with the folded wool. The tutorial explains how to make the spine using the quilting.

I now have a set of two sewing accessories. The Needle Book finishes about 4 1/4″ x 4 1/4″. I also made a separate elastic band to keep it closed for travel.

I created this month’s Bitty Blooms piece for Fall.

I embroidered the design on a linen napkin and used Aurifloss to stitch with. You can find the Bitty Blooms patterns and the cute buttons I used on the Needle Book in Jacquelynne’s shop.

I used Vonna’s, The Twisted Stitcher, tutorials for mounting it, the same as last month’s. The only difference was in the placement of the mounted pieces and using the rick rack on the embroidered piece. This month, I placed each piece 1/2″ away from the two sides and bottom edge. You can find my Bitty Blooms Finishing Tutorial here. I used Christy’s, Java Girl Stitches, YouTube bow tutorial for making the bow. It’s a simple technique without twisting the ribbon.

I started making the transition from summer to fall in my kitchen, starting with the Bitty Blooms Fall piece.

I also finished the Chalkfull Harvest small cross stitch by Hands on Design and Pricilla Blain.

I used 16 ct chalkboard Aida and all the called for threads. It makes a nice addition to my kitchen shelves.

And just a quick reminder, all project bags and patterns are on sale for 15% off in my Etsy shop through Labor Day.

Now for the Giveaway. Thank you all for your nice comments last month and Julie was last month’s winner. This month, please leave a comment (instructions below) and tell me if you decorate for fall.

I do decorate for fall. My street has a mixer each month and we always host in November, and I do go overboard with fall decorations for that. I do love your little projects and really MUST make them myself to add to my fall décor.
