Ambience Quilt Finish

Hello Everyone! I hope you are having a good weekend. We had an excellent waterfall hike on Friday and I’ll be sharing that in a separate post. Today, I have a few pictures to share of my nephew’s graduation quilt.

I started with the Ambience pattern by Brigitte Heitland of Zen Chic, which came as an exclusive in the December ’21 Sew Sampler Box from Fat Quarter Shop. I modified the pattern to make it larger. My quilt finishes at 70″ x 86″. I used the Jr. Jelly Roll, Celestial, that came with the box and added Modern Backgrounds More Paper that came in a box from several years ago. Both of these fabric lines are from Zen Chic. The background fabric is Timeless Treasures Mix Basic in Black/Charcoal.

This is a picture of the original quilt by Zen Chic. To make mine larger, I turned the blocks horizontally and staggered them.

I really wanted to use a flannel backing, but I couldn’t find one I liked in a 108″ large backing fabric. I ended up using Robin Pickens’ Thatched Graphite in the 108″. I also used it for the binding.

I quilted it with a layer of 80/20 Quilter’s Dream batting in white. I usually use black batting with a dark background, but I couldn’t find any in the 80/20 this time. I free motion quilted it with wavy lines using Aurifil 6736, a charcoal gray thread color. By the time I finished quilting it, it was a mess with batting dust all over it. It had to have a good session with a lint roller when I was finished.

I’m very pleased with the quilt. It’s not my usual style so it does make it harder to work on, but when I make these quilts for my nieces and nephews, I try to choose a pattern that will suit them.

If you look closely, the Modern Backgrounds fabric has airplane diagrams on it. Currently, my nephew’s ambition is to become a commercial pilot like my brother. The quilt has been shipped and should arrive shortly. His is the last graduation quilt and including my two kids, I’ve made 11 over the past 10 years.

I have begun to cut out lots of fabric for bags, my Moda Blockhead blocks, and a new quilt I want to start. Hopefully I’ll have lots of progress to share next week. Have a great week and thanks for stopping by.
