Hello Everyone! I’m excited about a new project I’ve been working on, the Scattered Leaves and Pumpkins Pillow or Mini Quilt.
I made this after the August Minis and More, Mini Pumpkins mini quilt. The inspiration for making the pillow came from Sherri and Hildy on Instagram. It was fun to make and even though there are some small pieces, it went together quickly. Definitely a weekend project.
I wanted to make my pumpkins different than the mini quilt, so I set the scrappy pumpkin squares on point. I had played around with this pumpkin design last fall for a pillow, but never got it made. The maple leaf blocks are also simplified. Instead of making them from all squares and HST squares, I made them with rectangles and the flip and sew method. This means less sewing and matching seams!
After I made the top, I liked it so much that I thought I would try to write a pattern. I showed the pillow at my quilt guild meeting and was encouraged by the members to give it a try. So I did. I’ve spent the good part of two weeks writing it and creating diagrams (the hard part).
I’ve listed the pattern on the Craftsy platform and you can find it here if you want to take a look. The Pillow is 16 1/2″ x 16 1/2″ and uses a standard 16″ x 16″ pillow form and the Mini Quilt is 17 1/2″ x 17 1/2″. I used scraps of orange for the pumpkins and I wrote the directions to use a 5″ square for the leaf blocks because I had some from charm packs I wanted to use.
I made an envelope back for the pillow and the instructions are included in the pattern.
Don’t you love the pumpkin? I quilted in the ditch around the pumpkin pieces and the leaves, then free motion quilted a paisley pattern in the background. I added a cute little swirl to the leaf blocks.
The pillow looks great on my foyer bench. Because this is my only fall pillow, I added my Maple Leaf Log Cabin quilt that I made about 9 years ago from a pattern that was in an issue of American Patchwork and Quilting.
The top also looks good as a table topper and it would also look good hanging on a wall. The background fabric is Indigo and Cheddar by Nancy Gere for Windham Fabrics. The Pillow Backing is Beauty-Fall by Sandy Gervais for Moda Fabrics and the pumpkin and leaf fabric came from my scrap stash and 5″ charm collection. The binding is orange Moda Grunge.
I hope you’ll go to Craftsy and take a look at the pattern. I have the pattern listed at and introductory price of $5.00 through Monday, after that I’ll be listing it for $6.50. If you make Scattered Leaves and Pumpkins, please send me pictures and I’ll include them in a post.
Thanks for stopping by,
