I Love Home Block 3 and Giveaway!

Now for this month’s block…

Again, another great block by Jacquelynne! She has added a new to me technique in the star units this month, Half Rectangle units. I want to give you a tip about piecing the Half Rectangle units. Read the instructions carefully! Even after I read them and looked at the diagram, I still sewed the star half rectangles wrong. Fortunately, I noticed the mistake before I cut the fabric. Jacquelynne has created a tutorial and video to walk you through making and trimming the units to size. They are not hard, but you do need to pay attention to the directions.

It seems like each month, I’m adding a few more details of embroidery to the applique. I really like the way the embroidery gives the applique some depth. Maybe a few buttons could be added to these blocks after they’ve been quilted. (Wink, Wink)

This month, I used Aurifloss by Aurifil, DMC Floss and Sue Spargo’s Eleganza Perle Cotton.

Instead of using a fabric center for the flower, I used the chain stitch to outline the center. Again it just adds some dimension to it. The windows are also outlined with the chain stitch.

I used Sue Spargo’s variegated thread as the leaves on the flower this month. Can you tell which stitch I used inside the leaves? It’s the buttonhole stitch! The outside of the leaf is backstitched, then I used the buttonhole stitch for the center stem inserting the thread into the bottom of the leaf.

Here is another example of using the buttonhole stitch by itself. For those new to embroidery, you don’t just have to use it to outline your applique. These flowers were designed by Jenny of Elefantz.

Another new detail I added this month was the scallops over the window. These are in the embroidery design so I thought I would add them here. Last month I added them, but didn’t fill them in. This month with the lighter fabric on the house, I thought the satin stitch again added dimension to the house.
