I Love Home Block 3 and Giveaway!

Hello Everyone! For those of you looking for the Minis and More Parade, you can go here or scroll through this post about a lovely house BOM (and add your chance to win a giveaway).

Today I get to share Block 3 for the I Love Home BOM by Jacquelynne Steves, but first, this month’s sponsor. It’s a great assortment of buttons and charms from I Love Buttons, Etc.

ILoveHomeBOM-OctoberGiveaway

I know for myself, it’s always fun to add embellishments to my applique.  Read to the end of this post to see how you can win this great giveaway.

Now for this month’s block…

Again, another great block by Jacquelynne! She has added a new to me technique in the star units this month, Half Rectangle units. I want to give you a tip about piecing the Half Rectangle units. Read the instructions carefully! Even after I read them and looked at the diagram, I still sewed the star half rectangles wrong. Fortunately, I noticed the mistake before I cut the fabric. Jacquelynne has created a tutorial and video to walk you through making and trimming the units to size. They are not hard, but you do need to pay attention to the directions.

It seems like each month, I’m adding a few more details of embroidery to the applique. I really like the way the embroidery gives the applique some depth. Maybe a few buttons could be added to these blocks after they’ve been quilted. (Wink, Wink)

This month, I used Aurifloss by Aurifil, DMC Floss and Sue Spargo’s Eleganza Perle Cotton.

Instead of using a fabric center for the flower, I used the chain stitch to outline the center. Again it just adds some dimension to it. The windows are also outlined with the chain stitch.

I used Sue Spargo’s variegated thread as the leaves on the flower this month. Can you tell which stitch I used inside the leaves? It’s the buttonhole stitch! The outside of the leaf is backstitched, then I used the buttonhole stitch for the center stem inserting the thread into the bottom of the leaf.

Button Hole Stitch Details

Here is another example of using the buttonhole stitch by itself. For those new to embroidery, you don’t just have to use it to outline your applique. These flowers were designed by Jenny of Elefantz.

Another new detail I added this month was the scallops over the window. These are in the embroidery design so I thought I would add them here. Last month I added them, but didn’t fill them in. This month with the lighter fabric on the house, I thought the satin stitch again added dimension to the house.

I hope you think about adding some details to your applique. Maybe you’ll be the lucky winner of the button package this month.

You can win “The I Love Buttons” package by leaving me a comment telling me if you’ve ever used embellishments on your quilts or embroidery. The contest is open to everyone, international readers included. Leave me a comment on this blog post by Sunday, October 8 at 11:59 PM EDT. Please note this is a day earlier than the other posts.

Be sure to check out all the other bloggers to see their wonderful Block 3 and enter on their sites for a chance to win, too.

You can also follow along and post your own pictures on social media using #ILoveHomeQuilt on Instagram and Jacquelynne’s Sew Quilty Friends page on Facebook and on Pinterest.

I’ve only quilted for a year on and off, but since someone once told me there are no rules, I use anything that takes my fancy: colourful beads in all their shapes and colours, pearls and trinkets from broken necklaces and various trimmings, like ribbons and rick rack. Funny, I’ve never used buttons!!

I don’t usually use embellishments but I did make several snowmen embroideries where I used tiny black sew-on snaps as the snowman’s eyes. It works great! They also look awesome as the spots on the back of ladybugs! Now that’s a new hint for you. Love your block and love the addition of embroidery to it. Thanks for the idea about the buttonhole stitch around the flower; going to do that right away on a flower project I’m in the process of finishing!

I do like using the right embellishment on my quilts and embroidery. It is an unexpected touch no one expects to see unless you do it all the time, them people would say where did she put it now… but I’ve seen people just OVERDO. Also somepeople forget to ralize not to pput them on quilts for baby or children. It’s just hard sometimes to find just the right one(s).—Robin 🙂

My godmothers quilts inspired me to be a quilter as an adult when I retired after becoming ill. Her quilts often had embellishments on them and where sometimes pretty wild. And i loved them. I have almost all of them. I cherish them. So I do embellish on some on my quilts in many different ways depending on what the quilt is being used for, the pattern, the person is going to and my mood. Its a lot of fun. I dont do quite as much as my godmother did 😉 But i dont think anyone does or ever did. God bless her soul.

I jut recently made my first wall hanging. What a joy!! I love it. Made in all batik fabrics, it is a vase of flowers being knocked over. Water is spilling and flowers are flying. There is a dragonfly flying over the wreckage I named it “no, No , KAYLEE DONT!!” It has buttons, and beads as well as the dragonfly.
