Maggie’s First Dance, Setting Blocks

Hello everyone! It’s the first Monday of the month and that means it’s time for another installment of Maggie’s First Dance Free BOM by Jacquelynne Steves. If you are looking for the Minis and More September post, go here then come back and read about Maggie’s Dance.

First, I want to introduce this month’s sponsor and guest blogger, Christa Quilts. Christa Watson designs modern quilts and she has also written a couple of books for quilting on your domestic machine, Machine Quilting With Style  and The Ultimate Guide to Machine Quilting with Angela Walters.

The prize this month is this awesome pack of patterns by Christa. Be sure to read to the bottom to learn how you can win.

Now onto this month’s block. It’s the setting block for Maggie’s Dance. There are five blocks, but don’t worry, they went together very quickly. Jacquelynne’s instructions are very easy to follow.

First up is my embroidered version. I decided that since there was going to be a lot more white space in the embroidered block, I would use a print in the center of this block.

I’m using Bright Sun by Sherri and Chelsi for Moda.

img_2020-2

Here it is all together. I’m really pleased with it. The blue dot is a little bright here, but I’ll let you in on a secret, I already have the borders on and I think it looks great.

img_2024

For my hand appliqued version, I went with the neutral center. I’m already thinking of ways to FMQ this.

img_2026-jpg-quilting

I did a little sketching of what might go in the center. Please forgive the roughness of the design. This was the first time I played with the drawing tool on my computer. I had a Samsung Note 14.1 that I could draw on, but I dropped it and broke the screen and they don’t make them anymore and it was almost as expensive to fix it as buy something new.  If you have a feature like that on something though, it’s a great way to audition different designs.

When you put all the blocks together, the corner triangles makes a great secondary design. Something else that will be fun to quilt.

I am in Hubbard Oregon and fall has arrived. It has started to rain and the temp has dropped to around 60. We had a hot and dry summer and so the rain feels good. I love your bright blue dots.

It has cooled down to low 80’s but where you really feel the fall is in the early morning before the sun rises. Feels so good.

Love the secondary patterns showing up! In the middle of Missouri in the middle of the Midwest in the middle of the country, Autumn is beautiful right now, the start of amazing color shows of leaves, finally relief from a very wet humid summer, amazing clouds and rainbows and blue skies . . .
