Maggie’s First Dance BOM, Block 4

Happy Labor Day everyone! I hope you have had a good weekend so far. For those on the east coast, I hope you haven’t suffered too much damage from the storm. If it’s rainy where you are, it’s a good time to make Maggie’s First Dance, Block 4 by Jacquelynne Steves. This month’s prize is being sponsored by Deannne of Snuggles Quilts.

SnugglesQuilts-prizes

She is also a guest blogger this month and I’ve added her to the blog hop list. Read to the end to find out how you can win these great quilt patterns. Now for Block 4…

This is my embroidered version.  The fabrics are Bright Sun by Sherri McConnell of A Quilting Life. As I have done with the other blocks, I’ve added a little extra to the embroidery based on Jacquelynne’s note cards.

The main parts of the design are worked with 3 strands of DMC floss, the running stitch in the flower is done with 2 strands and I used 3 strands for the satin stitch inside the leaves. Now that the blocks are finished, I can color the cards and use them.

Notice the darker blue in Block 4. (Sorry for the tiny threads. I didn’t notice them until the pictures were on the computer).

When  I looked at the other 3 blocks, I thought they were all very close in value and I needed to add something darker. However, when I put this block with the others, I thought it stood out too much.

I had already made one of the setting blocks so I could see how the fabrics in that block were going to fit with the others. I looked at them on my design wall for a few days.  There was something about the combination that I didn’t like. I am using the blue dot in Block 2 in the setting blocks. The problem was that the blues were all the same value and the one in Block 4 was so much darker. I decided to make a change. Not to Block 4, but to Block 2.

I carefully removed the seams around the blue triangle, cut a piece of the new fabric the same size, then sewed it back onto the taupe piece.

Much better, just enough darker to make a difference.

IMG_1862 (2)

Here they are all together. I am much happier with the new combination. I guess my point is, if you’re not happy with something, then change it. I would hate to spend all the time required to make and quilt something, then 2 years later wish I had changed it every time I looked at it.

Now for the appliqued version.

IMG_1879 (2)

As you can see in the applique, I changed the combination of colors a little. Instead of the red/white print in the flower, I used the grey. I changed the leaves, too.

I think I’ve changed the applique color placement in all of them. The combination of fabrics Jacquelynne chose are beautiful. I just need to be a little different, make it my own, which is okay. Speaking of the fabrics, they are Hometown Girl by Pat Sloan for Moda. A few weeks ago, I was fortunate to meet Pat and do a workshop with her. You can read about it here. She is an awesome lady and has accomplished so much in her quilting career.

Now, to win this month’s prize…

It’s always so interesting to see how everyone completes their blocks, so be sure to share your completed blocks at the following places:

Just one more thing. As I’ve said above, I enjoy making minis. Sherri McConnell at A Quilting Life hosts a monthly Minis and More Parade. She is trying to up the participation so this month’s mini is a  Scrappy Fall Place Mat. She designed it and we are using it for September’s mini. Sherri has a free tutorial for it here. I plan on making mine into a table topper. I hope some of you will decide to join us this month.

Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy making Block 4.

  1. I make quilts for coworkers who are expecting. I get good practice for fmq. If it is imperfect, the wee one doesn’t care, so most of them are crib size. it has been a very fertile year. One more to go!

All your blocks are beautiful! I’m like you though, if something is bothering me, I have to change it otherwise every time I look at it, I’ll be wishing I had made the change. I like making all sizes of quilts. I love quilts for the beds as well as the couch. I’m also a lover of minis ;-D

Thanks for a chance to win.
    Fingers crossed.

I prefer bigger quilts. I have no inclination for a special size, but I’ve never done a small quilt. The smallest is the one I’m attempting as a Christmas gift for my parents in law. It will be a wall hanging.

I am a beginning level quilter and have only made a couple of small wall hanging quilts and a couple of baby quilts. I hope to get to where I can make full-size quilts.

I make lap/throw size because they are easier to fmq. I am working (it’s actually in UFO status) on a queen-size quilt for our bed.

I like to make lap size as any larger are just too hard for me to quilt. However, if a larger size is needed I save my pennies and “quilt by cheque!”.

I love ALL of your blocks! It’s fun to see how we are all doing our customization thing! And I’m right there with you on redoing things that bug you. Yesterday I spent 4 hours working on a pieced backing, only to realize that I didn’t have enough contrast. New fabrics have been cut and are ready to sew tonite!

Mini quilts are so quick… I have been making many minis. Lap size are my favorite size after minis. I really enjoyed seeing all 4 of your blocks in both versions. Inspiring!

Funny you should ask what size do I like to make, I usually say “This time I am going to make a lap quilt” but; somehow it often ends up being a lot bigger. The only way I stay true to size is if I follow a pattern, this is why I love Maggies first dance, it is filled with piecing, embroidery and or applique, such a variety of elements, it can have one or two borders and is a beautiful neat size when complete. This is my favourite size quilt this month.

I like to make a little bigger than lap size, but they do not fit beds. And it annoys my husband to no end! Smaller are just easier to handle for me, and I like the instant gratification from a “quick” quilt. Alas, I will be starting to make all of my quilts queen size and larger so that we will have some “bed” quilts.

I enjoy making any size quilt! Got started quilting making baby size, have done some large (over king size), as well as lap quilts, wall hangings/table coverings, quilted wallets & minis – simply enjoy the projects! Currently have an idea for a small table covering using post card size images transferred to fabric for the center medallion (new technique for me). Plan is to combine some watercolour batiks with some special huckleberry prints. Now to find the post cards.

I have made bed sized quilts for everyone in my family (well, I am on the last one for a nephew!) so now I like to make wall size and couch quilts. My husband made me a wall with perfect lighting to highlight my quilts and I like to change them often and everyone likes to snuggle under my quilts since I keep my house VERY cool in the winter! Love your color scheme in your blocks.
