Third Finish-A-Long, Q3

Hello everyone! Hope you’ve had a pleasant weekend so far. Summer is winding down and I’m looking forward to some cooler temperatures soon. However, it also means the beginning of school. Our daughter is moving into an apartment this year at school, so we’re going to help her move at the end of the week. It’s been fun having her at home, but I think she’s ready to get back.

Anyway, I have a finish to share with you today. You can find my Q3 list here.

It’s July’s Mini Quilt for “a year in the garden” stitchery by Jenny of Elefantz. I haven’t stitched one of these in several months, so it was fun to get back to it. The border is from the Little Ruby collection by Bonnie and Camille for Moda. I used DMC floss for the embroidery.

I decided to quilt this one a little differently. I used my open toe embroidery foot and outlined the main stitchery pieces. Then I played with some of my machine embroidery stitches to see if I wanted to use any of them.

I liked the loops, but because they are so small, I thought it would take a long time to do them. I went with the long wavy line. The only problem with doing it this way is that I had to break my thread a lot so I wouldn’t stitch over the embroidery. If I had free motion quilted it, I could have stitched over previous lines.

I ended up spending about an hour knotting and cleaning up the thread ends. All because I didn’t feel like spending 10 minutes setting up the machine for free motion quilting. But if you don’t like to free motion quilt, check out your machines stitches for quilting ideas.

Here it is on my stand in my sewing room. I was finally able to take April’s off. I hope to get August’s done by the end of the month. (I still haven’t done May’s and June’s, but now I have 9 months to get those done)!

I also finally finished my last two Blocks on the Grow for Quilts on the Go for June. This is block 22 from “The New Hexagon” by Katja Marek.

This is block 24. Now for those who may be doing the Quilt a Long, mine looks a little different. I didn’t have the book with me when I started sewing the pieces together, so I thought this was how it was supposed to look. I didn’t realize that the triangles weren’t lined up the right way until I had sewn it all together. Well, I decided it looked fine and wasn’t going to redo it. I saved the papers, so if I want to do it again, I can.

By finishing these 2, I am officially half way through with the blocks. I have started piecing together the first one for July.

Just one more thing. On Monday, I’m going to spend the day in a work shop with Pat Sloan. She is coming to our guild, The Silver Comet Stitchers. I’m excited to meet her. She is hosting the The Splendid Sampler quilt a long and she also designed the fabric that I’m using for Maggie’s First Dance BOM hand applique.IMG_1663 (2)

I will share more after the work shop. Thank’s for stopping by.

  1. I am going to have to dig out my embroidery thread and do some hand sewing in the evenings. I was given a little electric hair clipper. There is a label on it called “The Quick Ripper”. My husband has one to trim his mustache and beard. Just run it across the back of the quilt and it cuts the threads.

Cute birdie for July! It is fun to try something new with quilting, though I sympathise with having all those ends to finish off. Congratulations on the finish and thanks for linking up to the FAL quarter three on behalf of your team of hosts
